English Classes with the Community!

This post features student writing.

Hola desde Ecuador!

As part of our community service project the community showed interest in having us teach English classes to the local kids, currently on summer vacation. We started our first lesson by playing a round of Pictionary in which the kids had to shout out the English word for the picture being drawn. After a couple of rounds, the kids showed us that they were quick studies with vocabulary regarding shapes, numbers, and animals so we moved on to Memory. All the kids got a slip of paper with a word either in English or Spanish and they had to find their partner who had the same word in the other language. For a fun break we sang head, shoulders, knees and toes until the kids were able to do the entire thing on their own! To finish off the lesson we took turns with the kids reading books we brought from home. This was a great way of seeing them connect the vocabulary used earlier into real sentences. Then, we transitioned to the soccer field where we played ¨tingo tingo tango” which was explained by a student as a game similar to hot potato. The player with the ball sang a song with their eyes closed while passing the ball around the circle. Whenever they decided to say ”tango”, the person who currently was holding the ball had to answer a vocabulary question. To close the day, a fun game of girls vs boys soccer was played to celebrate a successful first day of English lessons!
